Cancelling contracts on time: understand notice periods and never miss one

As of: 5 October 20264 min read

Phone, internet, gym, magazine: many contracts run for a fixed term and renew if you don’t cancel in time. The problem is rarely the cancellation itself but the timing. If you know the last day to cancel and get reminded of it, you decide yourself instead of automatically paying on.

Term, notice period and renewal

Three details from the contract decide when you have to act. They’re usually in the order confirmation, in your customer account or in the contract terms.

  • Term: how long the contract runs at least, for example 24 months from the start of the contract.
  • Notice period: how long before the end your cancellation has to reach the provider, for example one month.
  • Renewal: what happens if you don’t cancel. The contract then continues, for example, cancellable monthly or, for older contracts, for another whole year.

Plan a few days of buffer: what matters is when the cancellation reaches the provider, not when you send it.

What applies to newer contracts

In Germany, for many consumer contracts concluded since 1 March 2022, for example for phone, internet, gym or magazines, the rule is usually: after the minimum term they no longer renew for a whole year. They continue indefinitely and can then be cancelled with at most one month’s notice.

Older contracts may still work differently, and some contract types like insurance, electricity or gas have their own rules. What exactly applies to your contract is in the contract terms.

Cancelling correctly

  • Text form is usually enough: a cancellation by email or via your customer account is usually sufficient. A signed letter is rarely needed.
  • Cancellation button: in Germany, if you can conclude a contract on a website, the provider has had to offer a simple way to cancel there since July 2022.
  • Complete details: name, customer or contract number and the sentence “I cancel at the earliest possible date”.
  • Keep the confirmation: save the cancellation confirmation and check that nothing is debited after the end of the term.

Special right to cancel after price increases

If a provider raises the price, many contracts give you a special right to cancel, for example for electricity, gas, mobile phone and internet, often also for insurance. You can then cancel before the regular end of the term.

How long you have for this is stated in the price increase notice or in the contract. So read such emails right away and not only after the next debit. More on this in Subscriptions and price increases.

The contract checklist

  1. Collect all contractsGo through the bank statements of the last twelve months: phone, internet, electricity, insurance, gym, magazines, memberships.
  2. Note the deadlinesFor each contract write down the end of the term, notice period and renewal, and calculate the last day to cancel.
  3. Set a reminderTwo to four weeks before the last day to cancel, so there’s time to compare.
  4. CompareIs there a cheaper tariff with the same provider or elsewhere? Sometimes a call announcing that you intend to cancel is enough.
  5. DecideCancel or keep it deliberately. Both are fine, as long as you decided.

How it works in Ausgabentracker

On a recurring expense you tick “Contract with notice period” and enter the end of the term, the notice period and the renewal. The app calculates the last day to cancel and reminds you beforehand. Then you choose “Cancelled” or “Keep”.

  • Notice in days, weeks or months; renewal for 12 or 24 months, cancellable monthly or end
  • Reminder 7, 14 or 30 days before the last day to cancel, by email or push
  • “Cancelled”: nothing more is booked from the end of the term
  • All contracts with their cancellation date under Analysis → Fixed costs & subscriptions

Frequently asked questions

What if I missed the deadline? With newer contracts usually not a big problem: after the minimum term you can usually cancel with one month’s notice. With older contracts the term may renew again. Then note the next date right away.

Do I have to give a reason? Not for a regular cancellation at the end of the term. For the special right to cancel you name the occasion, such as the announced price increase.

May the provider call me after I cancel? Often a win-back offer comes. It can be worth it, but you don’t have to accept.

How long should I keep the cancellation confirmation? At least until after the last debit, better a few months longer. See also Receipts and warranty.
